East Asia and Latin America

This volume sheds new light on the much-neglected topic of current and potential relations between East Asia and Latin America. The contributors contend that close cooperation between peoples and governments of these two areas is feasible and desirable and indeed that it could have beneficial effects on the shaping of a new world order in the face of globalization and in the wake of 9/11. In a genuinely comparative set of essays, the book focuses on two broad themes: economic and political connections between East Asia and Latin America, and similarities and differences in developmental paths and public policies. Part I explores economic linkages, emphasizing trade, investment, and patterns ...

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) of Korea

Untouched since 1953, the Korean DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) has transformed itself into one of the few ecologically pristine zones and a vital habitat for endangered species. Often cited as a potential "peace park", it could one day be a common ground for reconciliation and harmony. A wealth of data and information has been produced over time, documenting significant aspects of the DMZ and its implications for human and ecological security, both in Korea and worldwide. However, there is no single book in English that brings together the findings on the mechanism of evolution, the ecology and biodiversity of the DMZ. "The DMZ of Korea", by Kwi-Gon Kim, is the first step in this direction. It se...

"Following on the successes of two previous dictionary projects, the CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names and the CRC World Dictionary of the Grasses, Umberto Quattrocchi has undertaken this dictionary of economically important plants.... He has done for these plants what was so admirably done in his other works—brought the vast and scattered literature on plant names, and in this case, too, their uses, into coherent order so that the inquisitive scholar can get a foothold." —From the Foreword, Donald H. Pfister, Harvard University and Harvard University Herbaria, Cambridge, Massachusetts The CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants: Common Names, Scientific Names, Eponyms, ...

Symplectic Geometry and Mirror Symmetry

Symplectic Geometry and Mirror Symmetry

In 1993, M Kontsevich proposed a conceptual framework for explaining the phenomenon of mirror symmetry. Mirror symmetry had been discovered by physicists in string theory as a duality between families of three-dimensional CalabiOCoYau manifolds. Kontsevich''s proposal uses Fukaya''s construction of the A Oex -category of Lagrangian submanifolds on the symplectic side and the derived category of coherent sheaves on the complex side. The theory of mirror symmetry was further enhanced by physicists in the language of D-branes and also by StromingerOCoYauOCoZaslow in the geometric set-up of (special) Lagrangian torus fibrations. It rapidly expanded its scope across from geometry, topology, algeb...
